Purebred Thefts on the Rise! (and in the news)

If you’ve ever had a dog run away or even worse, stolen, then you know the heartache that comes with that feels beyond repair… I’m sure any pet owner would agree that it is certainly as hard as losing your own child. There are more and more reports of stolen dogs, especially purebreds, and also commonly in urban areas. Unfortunately, due to the economic downturn and many people strapped for money, dog thefts, and more so, purebred dog thefts, are on the rise, especially the ones that are most popular at the top of the AKC highest registration list, such …

Am I crazy to want two puppies??

vc_rowvc_columnvc_column_textMany people ask me what I think about getting two puppies at once, or adding a second Labrador (or dog).  Well, here is my opinion… Getting TWO puppies at once! I actually do advocate getting 2 puppies…afterall…dogs are PACK animals, so they are happiest with their own kind. It also solves the question of “guilt” when you are away and can’t be with your dog.  It also is less stress on the pups (no lonely crying pup in the middle of the night…), and is less stress on you. You do the training once for both…easier than getting a pup …

How Raw Diet Can Benefit Your Dog

Raw Diet.  Say these words, and your vet will go BERSERK! But here are the FACTS… The main reason they freak out: The people who don’t have a clue how to feed raw, and the vets who have extracted splintered (cooked!) bones from a dog’s guts. Boy, have we come a LONG way in our understanding and feeding or raw diet to our dogs in the past 20 years (we are about 200 years behind the UK and Australia–but at least their dogs are expected to live into their 20’s!!!! so we have soooo much to learn!) Pet food …

How do I get my puppy to stop play-biting?

vc_rowvc_columnvc_column_textPuppies play puppy games, not human games, with humans…And puppies in a litter play games such as wrestling, biting, chasing, tug-of-war, and keep away, until we teach him some others. Also, dogs and humans, despite our closeness and mutual affection, often miscommunicate. Children, particularly, routinely mishandle puppies, not realizing it, and are at risk of being nipped or even bitten (especially when they play puppy’s favorite game of “chase” for instance! ) It sounds weird, but to avoid lots of “hitting” on the nose or yelling, when your pup bites down on you or your child’s finger, take a finger …

How Can We Let These Little Babies Go?

I would say almost every puppy pick-up weekend I’ve had, people ask me “How do you let them go? I couldn’t do it, I’d want to keep them all!”, or something along those lines. And my initial response is “It was hard for me at first!”. I’ve been working here with the Stanleys for over 7 years now, and I still remember my first summer sending home puppies. I’d hold the little sweet babes I just watched grow their first 8 weeks, and say to Donna, “Can we just keep them???”. And while puppy snuggles are truly magical and few …
